Orange Claims 21-12 Win Over Black In OSU Wrestling Ranking Matches
Fuentes, Griffin, Shelton pick up key wins. Cowboys open season this Sunday at Central Missouri Open.
Stillwater, Okla. - The Oklahoma State wrestling team hit the mat for its annual Orange and Black dual tonight, with the Orange team coming out on top, 21-12. The dual featured several key matches that will help head coach John Smith continue to fill his starting lineup for the season opening dual against Oklahoma on December 2.
                 Â
Freshman Ben Ashmore opened things up for the Cowboys in style, earning a fall over Chad Ravannack in 1:35 to give the Orange squad a quick 6-0 lead. Senior and top-ranked Coleman Scott got all he could handle from last year’s 125-pound starter Tyler Shinn, squeaking out a 4-3 victory. Senior All-American Nathan Morgan also was pushed in a 6-3 decision over true freshman Luke Ashmore.
                 Â
“I don’t think I’ve ever walked away from a ranking match pleased,†Smith said. “It didn’t seem like anyone had a real attitude of domination. We’ll take several things from these matches and we should improve.â€
                 Â
Freshman Quinten Fuentes earned a come-from-behind 12-6 victory over true freshman Luke Silver in a key 149-pound match.
                 Â
“It was good. I wish I wrestled better in the first period, but Silver is strong and he’s pretty tough for a true freshman,†Fuentes said. “He caught me off guard and took me down twice. I’ve wrestled him in the summer, but that was freestyle. We’ve actually never wrestled each other in the room.â€
Incumbent starter and NCAA qualifier Newly McSpadden solidified his spot in the lineup with a convincing 6-2 victory over freshman Neil Erisman at 157 pounds.
                 Â
Junior college transfer Kyle Griffin was solid at 165 pounds, claiming a 6-3 victory over Kevin Wainscott. Griffin used a full second period ride and a third period takedown to propel himself to the win.
                 Â
All-American Brandon Mason and NCAA qualifier Jack Jensen battled in a 174/184 match, with Mason using a first period takedown and three-point near fall to set the stage for an eventual 7-1 victory.
                 Â
In one of two matches at 184 pounds, true freshman and Stillwater native Walker Clarke picked up a 6-2 decision over fellow true freshman Adam Rosholt, younger brother of former Cowboy standout Jake Rosholt and current Cowboy heavyweight Jared Rosholt. Clarke broke open a 2-1 match in the third period with a takedown and two-point near fall.
                 Â
In the other 184-pound match, redshirt freshman Cody Hill scored a 7-5 victory over true freshman Chris McNeil in one of the more exciting matches of the night.
                 Â
Jared Shelton wrapped up the evening with a 10-3 decision of true freshman Clayton Foster. Shelton blew the match open late in the third with a three-point near fall and finished with an impressive 2:15 of riding time.
                 Â
In a 133-pound exhibition, true freshman Jamal Parks was outstanding in an 18-8 major decision over Brad Neitenbach, racking up eight takedowns in his Cowboy debut.
                 Â
“Jamal had a lot of takedowns and he’s obviously someone who we look forward to watching in the future,†Smith said. “I thought he looked good.â€
                 Â
The records start counting when the Cowboys return to action this Sunday at the Central Missouri Open. The event was a late add to the schedule. The entire Oklahoma State team will be in action.
