The 13th ranked Newberry Wrestling team conducted their 3rd Annual Scarlet and Gray Intra-squad Scrimmage on Saturday November 3rd in Eleazer Arena. The Scarlet prevailed over the Gray 21-15 while taking six of the ten matches.
The scrimmage began with the highly anticipated return of red shirt sophomore Tony Washington (Georgetown, S.C.), as he earned a 13-0 major decision over heralded freshmen Corey Baudendistel of Orange Park, Florida at 133 pounds. Washington will be filling in for national qualifier Andrew Young (Summerville, S.C.) until Young returns from an injury. Look for Washington to move back to 141 upon Young's return.
The 141 pound exhibition featured two true freshmen in Kyle Packer of Marlton, New Jersey and Jesse Miller of Lilburn, GA. Packer squeaked out a 2-1 decision with riding time being the difference of the match.
At 149 pounds, # 7 ranked Latra Collick (Berlin, Md.) garnered a major decision with a 14-5 win over Raleigh Abbott (Powder Springs, Ga.). This sets up a highly anticipated battle for the spot with Christian Johnson of Summerville, SC. Johnson and Collick have split matches thus far in the season.
The 157 pounds exhibition went past sudden victory into the first tiebreaker before Dustin Harvey (Marietta, Ga.) prevailed 3-2, over Preston Hart (Suwanee, Fla), in the most exciting mach of the day. Both Hart and Harvey had chances to score but a late takedown in the second period of the first tiebreaker proved to be the difference for Harvey.
Alonso Azumendi (Wellford, S.C.) defeated Josh Whitelock (Rhodesdale, Md.) at 165 pounds. Azumendi, the number one ranked wrestler in the East Region, kept Whitelock at bay and won a hard fought 7-1 decision.
The 174 pound weight class is highlighted by red shirt freshman Bryant Blanton of Summerville, SC. He was unable to compete due to his obligations to the Indian Football team. He will be backed up by Karl Reed of Lenape, New Jersey.
At 184 pounds, returning national qualifier Keeno Griffin (Jacksonville, Fla.) thwarted a late rally by freshmen Jake Elkins (Trussville, Ala.) to win a one point decision, 7-6.
At 197 pounds #5 Kelly Anundson (Sparsk, Nev.) won with a 19-3 technical fall over red shirt junior Chris Wetmore (Hilton Head, S.C.).
The heavyweight bout featured #7 Cy Wainwright (Green Cove Springs, Fla.) against highly touted freshmen Drew Doyle of Wall, NJ. Wainwright cruised to a 13-2 major decision.
At 141 pounds Jesse Miller then fought off an early takedown by Kamron Johnston of Bossier City, LA to earn a 6-2 decision.
In the final bout of the day, Matt Oliver of Toms River, NJ earned a 10-1 major decision over Devon Gillett of Jessup, MD. Gillett managed to compete as the top earner for the Indian Cross-Country team earlier in the day and made it back in time to see action at the intra-squad meet as well.
The scrimmage was preceded by a free wrestling clinic hosted by the entire wrestling team which drew over 30 young grapplers and coaches from across the state.
