Northern Iowa wrestle-offs

Cedar Falls, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa wrestling team is a step closer to being ready for its season-opener after completing wrestle-offs Saturday at the West Gym.

No starting spots were set, but the 14 matches in front of a Family Weekend crowd gave the Panthers, including 13 freshmen, an opportunity to get some mat time. Sixth-year coach Brad Penrith said the wrestle-offs are important to the Panthers for a couple of reasons.

"For one, we wanted to get down to weight and wrestle in a singlet, with an official and timed periods - not in a practice," Penrith said. "Second off, we wanted to see where we're sitting, what we need to work on and where our shortcomings are at."

Among the more tightly-contested matches, senior Chris Bitetto won a 4-3 decision over redshirt freshman Moza Fay (Anamosa, Iowa/Anamosa) at 157 pounds. Sophomore Dan Dunning (Waterloo, Iowa/West) also pulled out a close win, earning a 3-2 decision over redshirt freshman D'Andre Nunn (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) with the help of a one-point riding time advantage.

Three other matches were decided by a single point, including freshman heavyweight Michael Zimmerly (Independence, Iowa/Independence) edging senior Michael Shedek (Marion, Iowa/Xavier) 2-1 after Shedek was penalized a point for stalling. At 141 pounds, junior Ryan Osgood (Mason City, Iowa/Mason City) held on for a 2-1 decision over sophomore C.J. Ettelson (Hudson, Iowa/Hudson), and sophomore Alex Dolly (Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawaka) earned a 5-4 victory over senior Curt Zinnel (Humbolt, Iowa/Humbolt/Iowa Central) at 174 pounds.

"We had some moments when we had some pretty good intensity and then some moments when we didn't," said Penrith. "You could see the experience in the older guys when they were wrestling the younger guys, but we had some of the younger guys step forward."

Among those were freshman Charlie Ettelson (Hudson, Iowa/Hudson), who won by fall over sophomore Colby Geotsch (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny), and redshirt freshman Andrew Anderson (Sioux City, Iowa/East), who won a 6-4 decision over junior Jeff Knoll (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way/Iowa Central).

"There's still a lot of question marks," said Penrith, regarding who his starters will be. "We've still got a lot of work to do, but some of the guys wrestled really well. We've got a lot of positives we can build on."

The Panthers open the season Nov. 12 at the Harold Nichols Open in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
