FEW SURPRSISES FOR FLYNN AS FIGHTING SCOTS HOLD WRESTLEOFFS
EDINBORO, PA – The Edinboro University wrestling team held its annual wrestleoffs on Sunday, October 30. Head coach Tim Flynn was pleased with what he saw, and also noted that most matches went according to plan.
“I thought the guys wrestled pretty well,” Flynn commented. “Particularly since we’ve only been in the room for three weeks. I thought we looked in good shape. Obviously we can wrestle better, but it’s early. I’m encouraged. “
After two solid recruiting classes, Flynn singled out his young wrestlers for praise. “I was really happy with the effort the younger kids gave us,” he related. “They wrestled hard, and they all seemed to compete well.”
While many of the weight classes were pretty much settled, there were several weights that bore interest. At 141 lbs., junior Rick McLaughlin (West Chester, PA/West Chester Henderson) handed Jay Morrison (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall), a highly-regarded redshirt freshman, a 6-2 defeat. “I thought Rick McLaughlin wrestled well,” noted Flynn. “Also, I think Jay Morrison can perform better than that, but take nothing away from Rick. He looked good. “
Another highly-touted recruit made his debut on Sunday, and as expected came away with the starting job at 125 lbs. Ricky Deubel (Chagrin Falls, OH/Kenston), a two-time Ohio state champion, was a 12-4 winner over last year’s starter, Greg Sill (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park). “Ricky looked sharp,” admitted Flynn. “He still has some rust after sitting out last year, but every once in awhile he’s something just makes you sit back and say wow. He will be a work in progress.”
Shawn Bunch (Leavenworth, KS/Leavenworth), last year’s runnerup at 133 lbs. with a 40-2 record, won by technical fall at 3:20 over redshirt freshman Ryan Morgan (Zanesville, OH/Columbus DeSales). The senior is number one in every preseason poll.
Freshman Gregor Gillespie ( Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) claimed the starting job at 149 lbs. with an impressive 8-0 win over incumbent Zach Plerhoples ( Wilmington, DE/Salesianum). The two-time New York state champion took Plerhoples down early and piled up over six minutes in riding time.
Matt Hill (Freedom, PA/Freedom) enters the season with high hopes after qualifying for Nationals in his first season as the starter at 157 lbs. The junior disposed of Michael Ashby ( Mentor, OH/ Mentor), 5-0. Hill was 30-14 a year ago and enters this season ranked 13 th by InterMat.
Deonte Penn (Solon, OH/Solon) is one of two starters who sat out the 2004-05 campaign. The junior won the EWL title at 149 lbs. two years ago, and now moves up to 165 lbs. He won by technical fall over Brendan Casey ( Lowell, MA/Lowell). Penn is ranked 15 th by InterMat and 19 th by The Wrestling Mall.
The 174 lb. match between starter Eric Ring ( Glassboro, NJ/ Washington Twp.) and challenger Phil Moricone ( Derry, NH/Pinkerton) was cancelled due to illness. Flynn hopes the two may meet this weekend at the EMU Open. Ring is ranked 10 th by Amateur Wrestling News and 20 th by The Wrestling Mall.
Like Penn, Alex Clemsen ( Moberly, MO/Moberly) redshirted last year. The junior has made a quick recovery after undergoing surgery late this summer. He won by technical fall over Donald Walker ( Heidelberg, Germany/ Heidelberg American) in his return at 184 lbs. Clemsen is a two-time national qualifier who is ranked 11 th by InterMat and 18 th by The Wrestling Mall.
Redshirt freshman Joe Fendone ( Salem, NH/Central Catholic) outlasted freshman Pat Bradshaw ( Saegertown, PA/Saegertown) at 197 lbs. by a 13-10 count. Flynn feels both youngsters have bright futures. However, the twosome must still contend with Jim Gibson (Hermitage, PA/ Kennedy Catholic), who sat out due to illness. The junior started at 184 lbs. a year and went 21-15. His experience still makes him the favorite at 197 lbs.
A muddied heavyweight picture was cleared up somewhat, but this weight be in a state of flux all year. Sophomore Koel Davia (Bethesda, OH/Union Local) prevailed after defeating freshman Terry Tate (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone Area), 5-3, in the semifinals, then edging sophomore Jeremy Mosley (Jacksonville, FL/University Christian), 4-3 in overtime, in the finals. Mosley had earlier defeated Tate by a 4-3 score.
Edinboro opens its 2005-06 campaign on Saturday, November 5, competing in the EMU Open. The following week the Fighting Scots oppose Slippery Rock, Old Dominion and Maryland in the Avalon Duals.
