Oregon State wrestle-offs

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State had eight wrestlers win best-of-three matchups, all in two-match sweeps, as the Beavers held their annual Intrasquad Meet on Saturday afternoon at Gill Coliseum.

Earning sweeps were Eric Stevenson at 125 pounds, Bobby Pfennigs at 133 pounds, Kyle Larson at 141 pounds, Orlando Perez at 149 pounds, Tony Hook at 157 pounds, Anthony Weber at 165 pounds, Jeremy Larson at 174 pounds and Kyle Bressler at 184 pounds. Pfennigs, Perez and Hook all earned a pair of pins in their matchups, while Stevenson and Larson gained two major decisions.

“The last couple of weeks when we’ve been having challenge matches (in practice), we haven’t wrestled aggressively,” OSU head coach Joe Wells said. “Today, we came out and got after it. We had a few freshmen who were nervous and a few juniors and seniors who have been there before, and they went out and got after it, and that’s what everybody wants to see.

“Overall, I thought we wrestled well; we were aggressive and scored points. I liked the new rules (regarding being out-of-bounds) with the emphasis being on the aggressive guy, and our conditioning looked good for this time of year.”

The Beavers begin the regular season at Hofstra on Nov. 17, then wrestle at the Cornell Tournament on Nov. 19. Oregon State’s first home meet will be against Oregon in the Northwest Dodge Dealers Civil War on Dec. 9.
