STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State’s wrestling team opened the 2005-06 season with its annual Orange/Black Dual, which saw the Black team come away victorious, 24-17, in front of an estimated crowd of 1,000 inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
The dual started at 125 with returning All-American Coleman Scott recording a decision over freshman Tyler Shinn to give the Orange team the early lead. Nathan Morgan quickly tied the dual with a decision over Ethan Kyle to make the team score 3-3.
Zack Esposito had a flurry of takedowns in the third period to record a technical fall over B.J. Jackson to give the Orange team an 8-3 lead. The black team responded however, winning the next three matches.
Kevin Ward took control of his match with Newly McSpadden with a first period takedown as he finished with an 8-4 decision. Johny Hendricks recorded two first period takedowns over Kevin Wainscott and coasted to an easy decision. Brandon Mason ballooned the team lead to 14-8 when he turned Taylor Hosick four times in the first period and recorded a technical fall at the start of the second period.
The closest match of the night was the first 184-pound match between Clay Kehrer and Brent Parkey. Parkey scored the first takedown following a Kehrer escape. Kehrer then reversed Parkey to take a 3-2 lead in the match. Parkey recorded an escape to tie the match and force overtime. The match went into a tiebreaker period and Parkey received the first decision for scoring the first offensive point. Parkey made a tactical error by choosing to go up to start the tiebreaker. Kehrer escaped, and he chose down when he had the option and recorded another escape to earn the victory.
Rusty Blackmon turned Jack Jensen twice in the second period to earn back points. He took advantage of it too by scoring a major decision after he accumulated two minutes of riding time.
Jared Shelton put the match out of reach for the Orange team. Shelton recorded a takedown and put Jake Duke on his back and pinned him in 1:30.
One of the most anticipated matches of the night was at heavyweight where two-time national champion Steve Mocco faced off against highly touted freshman Jared Rosholt. Mocco recorded two takedowns in the first period. The match ended in the second period when Mocco put Rosholt on his back and pinned him in 3:55.
Oklahoma State will host the 40th annual NWCA All-Star Classic presented by the United States Marine Corps on Nov. 21 before opening the regular season at Michigan State on Nov. 27.
