Ohio U. wrestle-offs

ATHENS, Ohio - Six redshirt freshmen on the Ohio wrestling team made themselves known with strong performances at the annual Green vs. White intrasquad scrimmage in the Convocation Center on Saturday as White outlasted Green by a 15-14 score.

Of those six redshirt freshman, Terry Jackson (Uhrichsville, Ohio) provided the biggest upset of the day when he defeated senior captain Jim Fowler (Valley City, Ohio) 3-1 in overtime at 141 pounds.

"Terry Jackson's performance at 141 was a big surprise," said Ohio head coach Joel Greenlee, who served as the referee for all of Saturday's matches. "He really took it to him from start to finish so that was a good match for Terry."

Jackson started the year behind fellow redshirt freshman Albert Madsen (Strongsville, Ohio) and junior Matt Smith (Sandyville, W.Va.) at 133 pounds but his performance Saturday has pushed him to the top of the chart at 141 pounds. In addition to Fowler at that weight, sophomore Frank Brown (Westerville, Ohio) remains a possible starter once he recovers from a knee injury.

According to Greenlee, sophomore Caleb Metcalf (Waterville, Ohio) and Madsen also looked impressive in their matches. Metcalf scored a major decision for the Green team in the day's opening match by beating redshirt freshman Jake Kagey (Alexandria, Ohio) by a 12-1 margin at 125 pounds.
Madsen then gave the White team its first points with a 7-1 decision over Smith in the 133 bout.

After a scoreless first period in the 141-pound match, Jackson chose down for the start of the second period and managed an escape. In the third period, Fowler also started down and escaped so the match went to overtime tied 1-1. Just 39 seconds into the first overtime period, however, Jackson got the takedown for the win.

At 149 pounds, junior caption Aaron Gomoll (Bay Village, Ohio) pushed the White lead to 9-4 with a 5-3 decision over redshirt freshman Jesse Irwin (Jacobsburg, Ohio). The match was tied 2-2 heading into the third period by Gomoll recorded an escape and then a takedown with 40 seconds remaining to seal the victory.

Jake Frerichs (Uniontown, Ohio), the redshirt freshman who has to replace four-time All-American Jake Percival at 157 pounds, showed his mettle by posting a 13-0 major decision over true freshman Mike Grandominco (Delaware, Ohio). During his redshirt season last year, Frerichs lost only to Percival and another All-American, West Virginia's Matt Lebe.

The next match combined the 165 and 174 weights as redshirt freshman Anthony Spooner (Cleveland) dropped a 6-3 decision to the heavier Ryan Knapp, a sophomore from McConnelsville, Ohio. Knapp scored a takedown in each of the first two periods and then secured the win with an escape in the third plus a point for riding time.

At 184 pounds, junior captain Brian Cesear (Amherst, Ohio) cemented his spot as the starter with a 6-2 decision over sophomore Adam Faires (Glouster, Ohio). Cesear registered a takedown just 20 seconds into the match and then added on an escape, another takedown and riding time to conclude his scoring.

Junior 197-pounder Nick Terbay (Dayton, Ohio) found himself in a dogfight with redshirt freshman Larry Reichard of New Albany, Ohio. With the match tied 3-3 in the third period, Terbay took the lead with an escape but then was called for stalling. Although Reichard was awarded the tying point with just 20 seconds left and the match ended at 4-4, Terbay won 5-4 with riding time.

"The match at 197 was a big surprise as well," said Greenlee. "Larry really wrestled well and he gave Nick everything he could handle."

In the day's final match, junior heavyweight Marcus Adelman (Alliance,
Ohio) tried to tie the match for the Green team with a major decision by fell just a point short with a 9-2 decision over senior Dave Campbell.
Adelman, the Mid-American Conference's top-ranked heavyweight, scored on four takedowns and riding time.

Prior to the noon scrimmage, the Ohio wrestling program hosted a three-hour clinic for local youth wrestlers.

"It was a great turnout, quite a few more than we expected," Greenlee said about the clinic. "We had over 100 kids so it was pretty crowded on the mats both here on the main floor and in our wrestling room. It helps expose us to a lot of kids who normally wouldn't get to come see us and the kids loved it so we're going to try to make it an annual event."
