...Seven Matches Decided By Two Points or Less...
Columbia, Mo. - The No. 14 Missouri wrestling squad gave Tiger fans their first glimpse of the 2005-06 edition of Head Coach Brian Smith's team, competing in 17 intrasquad matches in the Hearnes Center Fieldhouse. Six matches of the annual Black and Gold dual were decided by a single point, while a seventh ended in sudden victory in the first overtime period.
The only overtime match of the evening pitted redshirt freshman Andrew Sherry (Sewickley, Penn.) against sophomore Justin Cole (Gladstone, Mo.), and at the end of regulation the score stood at 2-2. Competing at 149 pounds, Cole utilized a single-leg takedown to end the match 33 seconds into the first overtime.
Continuing the spectacle with another exciting match, senior Austin DeVoe (Columbus, Kan.) and sophomore Tim Kephart (O'Fallon, Mo.) battled at 125 pounds, posting a 1-1 tie through the first six and a half minutes of action. With 18 seconds left in the match, Kephart took down DeVoe to gain a 3-1 advantage. DeVoe earned another point with eight seconds left by escaping the hold of the sophomore, but time ran out, giving Kephart a 3-2 victory.
After a 10-0 victory by sophomore Tyler McCormick (Leawood, Kan.) at 133 pounds over junior Amond Prater (Marietta, Ga.), three matches in a row went down to the wire, with just one point separating the combatants. In a hotly contested match at 141 pounds, senior Chris McCormick (Leawood, Kan.) earned a late takedown to beat sophomore Josh Wagner (Milton, Wis.). With the momentum carrying on to the 149-pound bout, junior Jed Lewis (Norfolk Neb.) also earned a third-period takedown to beat Cole.
Wrestling at 157 pounds, redshirt freshman Michael Chandler (High Ridge, Mo.) and sophomore James Williamson (Blue Springs, Mo.) fought to a 2-2 tie through seven minutes, but Chandler was awarded a 3-2 victory due to the 1:05 minutes of riding time he accumulated during the match.
Wrapping up the annual intrasquad wrestle-offs were strong performances by returning All-Americans Matt Pell (Luxemburg, Wis.) and Ben Askren (Hartland, Wis.), as well as a solid showing by freshman Max Askren (Hartland, Wis.), the younger brother of Ben. Competing at 165 pounds, Pell pinned freshman Nick Marable (Collierville, Tenn.) in 2:57, while Askren took 1:52 to drop the shoulders of redshirt freshman Joey Garrity (Orion, Ill.) to the mat.
Max Askren, competing at 197 pounds, beat senior Jeff Foust (Blue Springs, Mo.) with a 7-2 decision, to turn in his second strong performance in a Missouri uniform. The true freshman earned the 197-pound title at the Lindenwood Open Oct. 29.
The Tigers open their regular-season slate at Oak Park High School in Kansas City, Mo., Friday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m. (CST), taking on the Stanford Cardinal to kick off the 2005-06 season. For ticket information stop by the ticket office located in Mizzou Arena or call 1-800-CAT-PAWS.
