SDSU wrestle-offs



The South Dakota State University wrestling team posted a 27-22 team score in the Yellow and Blue intrasquad match Saturday afternoon at Frost Arena in Brookings.

Southwest Minnesota State transfer Jeff Cooley started off the match by defeating Alan Marvin, 11-3, at 125 pounds. Dan Bonte followed with a 7-1 decision over Nick Kulseth.

Dusty Kavitz took down Tyler Cuka in the third match of the night. Kavitz upended Cuka, 21-9, to record a victory at 141 pounds.

Brad Gregory, a senior from Glenwood, Iowa, posted a 7-3 decision over Nick Herrboldt. Gregory scored a takedown in the second period to secure the victory at 149.

Sean Flynn defeated Marc Wermersen, 14-5, in the other 149 pound match, while Chris Moran used a one-point escape in the final period to defeat Ryan Meyer, 2-1, at 174. In the 157 pound match, senior Andy Everson used a three-point near fall in the second period to secure a 17-6 victory over Justin Retallic

Tyler Sorenson, a redshirt freshman from Garretson, recorded two takedowns to defeat Levi Krehmeyer at 184, while heavyweight Jason Stripling upended Seth Fischer by fall in 2 minutes, 58 seconds. Freshman heavyweight Thomas Strubel followed suit by pinning Jake Tempel in 3 minutes, 24 seconds.

After Moran upendend Travis Gottschalk, 13-5, at 174, Marvin closed out the evening by tech. falling Marcus Waters, 16-1.

The Jacks open the season Nov. 4 at the Daktronics/Warren Williamson Open at Frost Arena in Brookings. Start time for the open will be at 9 a.m.
