STILLWATER, Okla. - The drive for five kicked off on Thursday night as the Cowboy wrestling team held its annual orange and black inter squad dual in historic Gallagher-Iba Arena. The orange team pulled out a close 22-18 win over the black squad.
The dual started at 174 and it started with a bang as Brandon Mason, an NCAA qualifier last season, pinned Taylor Hosick in 2:13 to give the orange squad a quick, 6-0, lead.
At 184, Jack Jensen captured a takedown with three seconds left in the first period against Cody Hill. The pair would trade escapes and Jensen took the match, 3-1.
At 197, the Cowboys are trying to replace Jake Rosholt, a four-time All-American and three-time NCAA Champion. The teams wrestled two matches at the weight and split, with Jared Shelton picking up a, 7-3, win over Chaz Cointment for the orange grapplers. Brent Parkey countered for the black with decision over Jake Duke, 3-2
The most exciting match of the night may have came at heavyweight where Jared Rosholt and Landon Harris battled for the spot vacated by former NCAA Champion Steve Mocco. Rosholt took the high-scoring affair, 10-6, over Harris. Rosholt built up an impressive 4:08 of riding time in the victory.
With the dual knotted at 9-9, Tyler Shinn and Ben Ashmore meet at 125. The pair scrambled for a lot of the first period with no one gaining an advantage. The match was tied at 1-1 when Shinn got a takedown with eight seconds left to gain the victory.
Coleman Scott made his debut at 133 and majored Mike Bizzle, 11-1. Scott, a two-time All-American, picked up three takedowns in the match. The win gave the orange squad a 13-12 edge.
The black squad quickly regained the lead when Nathan Morgan made his debut at 141. Morgan, an All-American last season, defeated Ethan Kyle, 4-1.
At 149, B.J. Jackson used two takedowns to get bye Ryan Freeman, 6-4.
The black squad took a 16-18 lead when Newly McSpadden used 1:31 of riding time to defeat Neil Erisman, 2-1
It seemed appropriate the orange squad found themselves down by two going into the final match of the evening. The orange team had Johny Hendricks on its side and the two-time NCAA Champion did not disappoint. Hendricks picked up fall against Kevin Wainscott at the 6:22 mark to give the orange squad a, 22-18, victory.
The Cowboys will kick off the 2006-07 season on November 12 when the host UC-Davis at 2 p.m., in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
