Edinboro wrestle-offs
The Edinboro University wrestling team held its annual wrestleoffs on Saturday, with several weight classes determined. They were few surprises as coach Tim Flynn’s team made final preparations for next Saturday’s season-opening Avalon Duals. The Fighting Scots will host Mercyhurst, Stanford and Maryland on November 4.
Freshman Eric Morrill (Sandown, NH/Timberlane Regional) likely secured the starting job at 125 lbs., winning out over three grapplers. Morrill, a three-time New England finalist and a three-time New Hampshire state champion, won by major decision over fellow freshman Kory Hiner (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf), then won by fall over sophomore Greg Sill (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park) at 2:46. Sill had advanced with a 5-3 overtime win over Danny Whitenak (Middle River, MD/Mount St. Joseph), another freshman. Whitenak would defeat Hiner, 9-3.
Ricky Deubel (Chagrin Falls, OH/Kenston), a national qualifier a year ago at 125 lbs., secured the starting job at 133 lbs., defeating redshirt freshman Joel Webster (Norfolk, CT/Northwestern Regional) twice, by scores of 2-0 and 10-4. Deubel earlier also handled freshman Lee Vanella (Mt. Pleasant, PA/Mt. Pleasant), 15-0. Webster was a 10-4 winner over freshman Kyle Fluke (State College, PA/State College) in the first round, then advanced to the final against Deubel with a 9-4 decision over junior Pat Wayne (Lowell, MA/Wayne).
Also at 133 lbs., Vamella was a 13-0 winner over George LaCour (Temple Hills, MD/Central). In the consolation rounds, Wayne was a 12-4 winner over LaCour and Fluke decisioned Vanella, 7-4, in a battle of freshman. Fluke would finish third thanks to a fall at 53 seconds over Wayne.
Expected starter Rick McLaughlin (West Chester, PA/West Chester Henderson) did not compete at 141 lbs. Daryl Cocozzo (River Edge, NJ/River Dell Regional), another of the highly-regarded freshman and a third-place finish at the high school Nationals, emerged as the winner at 141 lbs. He won two out of three matches over sophomore Ryan Morgan (Zanesville, OH/Columbus DeSales). Morgan won the first bout by a 3-2 decision, but Cocozzo came back with 8-4 and 5-2 wins.
Gregor Gillespie (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder), an All-American as a true freshman at 149 lbs., won by technical fall over Ezra Davis (Oil City, PA/Oil City) in the lone bout at that weight class.
At 157 lbs., John Foley (Port Jervis, NY/Port Jervis), a redshirt freshman, advanced to the final against senior Matt Hill (Freedom, PA/Freedom) with a fall at 2:53 over freshman Adam Bearden (St. Louis, MO/Lindbergh). Hill, in search of his third straight trip to Nationals, then prevailed by a 5-0 decision in the finals.
There were no bouts at 165 or 174 lbs. At 184 lbs., Alex Clemsen (Moberly, MO/Moberly), a three-time Nationals qualifier, was a 21-3 winner over freshman Shawn Fendone (Salem, NH/Central Catholic (Mass.)).
The move of national qualifier Joe Fendone (Salem, NH/Central Catholic (Mass.)) to heavyweight left senior Jim Gibson (Hermitage, PA/Kennedy Christian) and redshirt freshman Pat Bradshaw (Saegertown, PA/Saegertown) battling for the starting job at 197 lbs. Gibson, the starter at the beginning of the 2005-06 campaign before losing out to Fendone, prevailed with a 9-3 decision over Bradshaw.
Finally, Fendone picked up a pair of wins over redshirt freshman Terry Tate (Tyrone, PA/ Tyrone Area) to secure the heavyweight job. The sophomore won by decisions of 5-2 and 4-3.
