Appalachian State Intrasquad

Appalachian State wrestling took to the mats for the first time in the 2006-07 season Friday night for a preseason intrasquad scrimmage.

"This was a good opportunity to see how our freshmen perform out on the mats instead of just in the wrestling room," said head coach Paul Mance. "I thought everyone performed well, and it was good to see what kind of talent we have."

Any discussion of last season's best talent would have to begin with 149/157-lb. junior Scott Ervin, who posted an overall 23-2 record in matches and earned a second-place finish in the Southern Conference tournament. Ervin bested freshman Zack Martin 5-1 and freshman Mark Maya 8-2 in his two matches of the intrasquad.

At 133-lb., senior Terreyl Williams, ranked 20th nationally by WrestlingReport.com's preseason poll, defeated freshman Corey Hulsey 19-8 and freshman Miles Keene 23-10.

The Mountaineers hold one more intrasquad meet before beginning the season, the annual Black and Gold match on Nov. 6. ASU will begin its regular season on Nov. 10 when they host Wagner.
