CLEVELAND -- The No. 23 Lock Haven University wrestling team won nine of 10 bouts and bonus points were a big part of the story, as the Bald Eagles capped an undefeated run through Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) action with a dominating 36-6 win at Cleveland State (4-11, 1-5 EWL) today.
Seven of LHU's nine wins came by way of bonus points, as the Bald Eagles racked up five major decisions and two tech falls.
With the win, Lock Haven improved to 9-3 overall and ended its run through EWL duals at a perfect 6-0. With the win and perfect 6-0 record in league matches, the Bald Eagles clinched the EWL regular season title.
It marked LHU's first regular season EWL crown since the 1995-96 season. Ironically enough, that was the last time Lock Haven was perfect (6-0) in EWL duals.
No. 32 Luke Werner (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty), No. 30 DJ Fehlman (Warren, Pa./Warren), No. 21 Kyle Shoop (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs), Brock Port (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte), Alex Klucker (Summerdale, Pa./East Pennsboro), Jared Siegrist (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central), No. 17 Corey Hazel (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley), Parker McClellan (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) and No. 22 Thomas Haines (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco) all picked up victories for the nationally-ranked Bald Eagles today.
Werner and Haines posted LHU's tech falls at 125 and 285 pounds, respectively.
Shoop (141), Port (149), Klucker (157), Siegrist (174) and Hazel (184) all won by major decision.
For Shoop, his dominating victory at 141 pounds proved to be a special one. The win marked the 100th of his career, as Shoop became LHU's 21st 100-match winner.
The win for Haines extended his win streak to seven and Fehlman improved to 6-1 since returning to 133 pounds on January 25.
Werner got the Bald Eagles off to the start they needed on the road as the nationally-ranked 125-pounder (No. 32) posted a tech fall to open the match. Lock Haven won the first five bouts of the meet and raced out to a 20-0 lead.
Fehlman, ranked No. 30 at 133, earned a hard-fought win over Armando Torres before No. 21 Shoop posted his major at 141. Port (149) and Klucker (157) added majors, as the Bald Eagles tallied three straight major decisions to extend the lead quickly.
Ryan Ford posted Cleveland State's only win at 165, earning a hard-fought win over Collin Glorioso (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon), who got the call today for Lock Haven.
Siegrist posted another LHU major at 174 and No. 17 Hazel made it back-to-back majors with one of his own at 184. Rookie-McClellan posted a hard-fought 3-2 win at 197 and No. 22 Haines ended the match in style with a tech fall in the final bout.
The Bald Eagles have just one dual meet remaining this season. On Saturday, February 23, Lock Haven will host Appalachian State at 7:30 p.m. LHU will officially close the regular season on Sunday, February 24 by hosting the annual Mat-Town Open II Tournament.
