WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Waynesburg University wrestling team scored four bonus-point wins, two of which were forfeits, en route to a 28-12 win over Division II Seton Hill on Friday night at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
The Yellow Jackets (5-3) received their first forfeit at 125 pounds, where sophomore Gordan Bieber picked up the first six points of the match. The Griffins (2-2) bounced back with a decision win at 133, but Waynesburg re-established a six-point lead when junior Jake Vitolo picked up an inspired comeback victory at 141 pounds. After falling behind 5-0 early to Seton Hill's Kevin Laubach, Vitolo came roaring back to score the next seven points and take the bout 7-5.
The Griffins took one last shot at victory with wins at 149 and 157 pounds, but the Jackets' next three grapplers were ready to not only stop the rally, but seal the win. Junior Sam Guidi got thing started with a 4-2 win over Brett Smith at 165 pounds, before senior Anthony Bonaventura picked up the first bonus points of the evening with a 14-2 major decision win over Tyler Mohlhenrich. With his team up 16-9, senior Cameron Fine's pin in 4:13 at 184 pounds officially put the match out of reach for the Griffins.
The Jackets picked up one more forfeit at 197 pounds, which went to junior Patrick Jennings, before the visiting team scored a decision victory at heavyweight to end the night. Waynesburg not only took the overall match, but won the eight contested bouts by a combined score of 16-12.
The Orange and Black will go for a fifth dual win over a span of six matches on Tuesday, Dec. 17, when it travels to New Concord, Ohio to take on Muskingum. Start time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
